AC vs DC Charging: Which One Do You Actually Need?
One of the first questions every new EV owner asks: should I get an AC charger or a DC fast charger? The answer depends on how you drive.
AC Charging — The Daily Workhorse
AC chargers (3.3–22 kW) convert power using your car's onboard charger. They are affordable, gentle on the battery, and perfect for overnight home charging. A 7.4 kW home charger fully charges most EVs in 6–8 hours.
DC Charging — Speed When You Need It
DC fast chargers (30–240 kW) bypass the onboard charger and feed the battery directly. A 60 kW charger takes most EVs from 20% to 80% in about 40 minutes — ideal for highways and quick top-ups.
The Verdict
For 90% of daily driving, a home AC charger is all you need. DC charging fills the gap on road trips and busy days. The smartest setup: AC at home, DC on the go via the ChargerONN network.
